Wharram 52 Catamaran

White Seal is the very latest design from the drawing board of James Wharram the internationally respected designer of the true Polynesian "double canoe" cruising multihull. More than 4000 boats of his designs have been built since James first crossed the Atlantic in 1956 in his 25ft ‘Tangaroa' catamaran, the first multihull to make the crossing. James has chosen the beautiful ‘Pahi' 63 design for his personal boat, "Spirit of Gaia" but has said that he considers her successor, the Pahi 52, to be his masterpiece being the perfect combination of hull shape and beam/length ratio. Pahi 52s are professionally built in South East Asia at the Thailand boat yard of Seascape Ltd. owned and managed by Gunther Nutt a Lichtenstein cabinet maker turned boat builder. His yard is on the Island of Phuket , where he builds Wharram ‘Tiki' and ‘Pahi' boats to the highest specification. White Seal was launched there in July 2004 and completed in October. Following her proving trials she was sailed single handed by her owner the 1500 miles from Phuket to Malaysia and Singapore up the South China Sea to the Gulf of Thailand to her new home in Pattaya 2 hours south of Bangkok in the sheltered Gulf waters to join the Gulf Charters fleet. She has three beautifully appointed private double guest cabins, together with two bathrooms, both with shower, a fully equipped galley and salon and a huge deck cockpit to accommodate up to 35 people on a day sailing basis. The helmsman is located in the protected command module which also has a double berth for the skipper or off-watch crew. At the stern there is a large ramp which lowers to sea level to provide a floating jetty for easy dinghy access and has a drop down swimming stairway which makes diving and swimming from the boat a real pleasure. The rig is the latest wing sail design with wrap around soft gaff sails that are highly efficient and low drag. White Seal is schooner rigged with a traditional hanked jib ‘staysail' forward. She has two hydraulically controlled Yamaha 25HP four stroke engines that give her a cruising speed of 8knots. Her strong anchor windlass gives the crew an easy time handling the 80lb CQR ground tackle and chain.
